Retrieving the Capsule

Last updated: 2026-08-05

Find it. Mail it back.

The CapsoCam Plus capsule stores its pictures inside itself. It does not send them anywhere while it travels through the body. That means the whole study lives in the capsule until we have it in our hands — if the capsule is flushed away or thrown out, the pictures are gone with it, and the test has to be done again.

This is the one part of the test that only your family can do. Everything else is on us.

What is in the kit

Everything you need came home with you in the collection kit. There is one of each, so keep the kit together.

  • The silicone hat — the most important piece. A collapsible cup with a perforated bottom that sits under the toilet seat. Liquid passes through and the capsule stays behind.
  • The magnetic wand — the "magic wand". Lifts the capsule out so you never have to touch it.
  • The small plastic box the capsule came in. We give it back to you for exactly this.
  • The barcode stickers — for sealing the box once the capsule is inside.
  • The pre-labeled FedEx envelope — postage already paid.
  • The bag — for the supplies, or for carrying the silicone hat with you if you are away from home.

What to do

  1. Set up the silicone hat before your child's first bowel movement, and use it for every bowel movement until the capsule is found — including on days you think it has already passed.
  2. Keep a bottle or cup of water next to the toilet — warm water works better. After your child stools, pour it over what is in the hat. The stool rinses through the holes in the bottom and the capsule stays behind, so you are looking at a rinsed capsule instead of sorting through anything. Refill the bottle so it is ready for next time.
  3. Lift the capsule out with the magnetic wand. You do not have to touch it.
  4. Slide it off the wand using the lid of the box, then put the capsule in the box.
  5. Seal the box with the barcode stickers.
  6. Mail it back as soon as possible. The sealed box goes in the pre-labeled FedEx envelope, dropped at any FedEx drop-off location, staffed or unstaffed — find the nearest one. There is nothing to pay and no trip to our office.

Not sure whether what you found is the capsule? Keep it and call us — we would much rather look at something that turns out to be nothing.

If it was flushed, thrown out, or you cannot find it, call us. We may order an abdominal X-ray to make sure the capsule is not stuck.

While the capsule is still inside

  • Call us if you have not caught the capsule within 5 days. Our office is (317) 338-9450.
  • No MRI scan until the capsule has passed. If any doctor schedules an MRI in the meantime, tell them your child has a capsule camera inside.

Your instruction sheet has the full list of what to watch for, including when to call us urgently. Keep it somewhere you can find it.

Video and questions

CapsoVision, who make the capsule, have short videos and a question-and-answer page for families. The videos are available in nine languages — English, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, French and German.

  • What to expect — videos for patients and caregivers, in nine languages
  • Questions about CapsoCam, including how to collect the capsule

Those two pages are run by CapsoVision, not by us. Where they differ from the instruction sheet we gave you, follow our sheet and call the office if anything is unclear.

Questions
